This research investigated the attitude of Vietnamese immigrants in the US towards heritage language maintenance (HLM), their HLM practices, and the obstacles appearing in this process. Five Vietnamese immigrant families including foreign- born parents and their US-born children participated in in-depth interviews to share their perception and experiences in this field. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Overall, all participating parents showed a highly positive attitude with the idea of conserving Vietnamese for their children. To achieve this goal, a wide range of measures were exercised both inside and outside the home, for example, family communication in Vietnamese, registering in language schools, media or literature, etc. The results also suggested a new tendency of utilizing online resources like education applications or online classes. Despite efforts to maintain Vietnamese, these families faced various difficulties in learning and preserving their heritage language (HL) in a society where other languages are dominant and much different from Vietnamese. The study on Vietnamese American people provided several unique insights that are closely associated with this demographic. Hence, these findings offered practical implications for immigrant families in general and Vietnamese Americans in particular to successfully maintain their HL.
