A MULTIMODAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF A FOREIGN LANGUAGE CENTER’S WEBSITE IN VIETNAM : Phân tích diễn ngôn đa phương thức đối với trang điện tử của một trung tâm ngoại ngữ ở Việt Nam / Phan Thị Bảo Khuyên; Trương Bạch Lê Huế, 2025118tr. ; 28cm.Trường đại học Ngoại ngữ, Đại học HuếThis study examines how English language learning is represented and promoted through verbal and visual discourse on the official website of ILA Vietnam, one of the country’s leading private English language centers. The study uses a combination of Fairclough’s (1992, 2003) Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) Visual Grammar (VG) to analyze the linguistic and visual strategies in four major sections, including: About ILA, Programmes, Facilities, and Teachers. The verbal analysis reveals the use of modality statements, aspirational and emotive vocabulary, as well as references to international accreditation to make English a global, measurable, and empowering commodity. As observed in the visual analysis, the images of modern classrooms, confident learners, and foreign teachers are used to provide a visual support of these textual claims and highlight global professionalism, technological modernity, and Western dominance. The analyses expose four key ideologies, namely: (1) English as a global and standardised commodity, (2) English learning as empowerment and self- transformation, (3) English learning as confidence and emotional transformation, and (4) English learning as innovation and future-readiness. Collectively, these ideologies promote English learning as a pathway to confidence, success, and international opportunity. By integrating CDA and Visual Grammar, the study contributes to multimodal discourse research and illustrates the process of global ideologies of the English language being localized in the marketized education system in Vietnam. A PARALLEL CORPUS ANALYSIS OF TRANSLATION STRATEGIES OF PROPER NOUNS: THE CASE OF “HARRY POTTER” AND ITS VIETNAMESE TRANSLATION BY LÝ LAN : PHÂN TÍCH KHỐI NGỮ LIỆU SONG SONG VỀ CÁC CHIẾN LƯỢC DỊCH DANH TỪ RIÊNG: TRƯỜNG HỢP TÁC PHẨM “HARRY POTTER” VÀ BẢN DỊCH TIẾNG VIỆT CỦA LÝ LAN / Hồ Trần Anh Thi; Hoàng Thị Linh Giang Huế, 202585tr. ; 28cm.Trường đại học Ngoại ngữ, Đại học HuếThis study examines the translation of proper nouns in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince from English into Vietnamese. Although this novel is widely read in Vietnam, few studies have systematically examined how proper nouns are rendered using corpus approaches. To address this gap, a parallel corpus of English source text and its Vietnamese translation was built and analyzed by using Sketch Engine to extract proper nouns. This research applied a mixed-method approach to collect and analyze the data. Based on Fernandes’ (2006) taxonomy of proper noun translation procedures, Skopos theory (Reiss & Vermeer, 2014), and Venuti’s (1995) Domestication vs. Foreignization strategies, the study identifies translation procedures and translation purposes, Domestication or Foreignization strategy. From this, the research proposes plausible explanations for the reasons why the translator chose one procedure over another. Findings show seven procedures employed when rendering proper nouns into Vietnamese: Rendition, Substitution, Transcription, Recreation, Addition, Copy, and Conventionality. In general, Copy was preferred for iconic proper nouns to preserve identity (e.g., character names), whereas Rendition was chosen when the name had a clear meaning, Recreation was used when the name contained cultural, descriptive elements that needed to be adapted to suit the Vietnamese young readers, and Addition appeared to clarify the function or nature of the proper noun. Substitution, Transcription, and Conventionality were rare. The results also reveal that Domestication predominates with 216 cases (59.8%), while Foreignization is less frequent with 145 cases (40.2%). This indicates that, in this corpus, translator Lý Lan tends to adapt names to Vietnamese linguistic and cultural norms. Therefore, the current study aims at comparing some English Vietnamese love poems translated by human translators and AI to examine the similarities and differences between human and AI translations of English love poems into Vietnamese in the field of literary translation. The corpus of the research includes 30 English love poems along with their 30 Vietnamese human translations and 30 Vietnamese AI translations. The study used a qualitative method to analyze and compare human and AI translations in quality of meaning, cultural adaptation, accuracy and emotional expression. Besides the qualitative method, this study also used quantitative method to count the translation techniques used in each version. A three- dimensional evaluation rubric was set to make the findings more reliable and precise. Finally, the results show that both AI and humans can adapt basic meaning in love poem translations and utilize some fundamental translation techniques. However, AI translations are good accurate in structure and vocabulary. In contrast, Human translation (HT) presents emotional depth as well as cultural sensitivity. The findings indicate that machine translation can serve as a supportive tool for human translators in love poem translation help humans to save time and improve accuracy. The results contribute additional knowledge, data, and new perspectives to this field. These are good for translation learners, trainers and programs.

Doctor-patient communication in the medical Tv series " HOUSE M.D" : Giao tiếp bác sĩ bệnh nhân trong loạt phim truyền hình y khoa " House M.D" / Nguyễn Hữu Nhật Tân; Trần Thị Thảo Phương Huế, 2025176tr. ; 28cm.Trường đại học Ngoại ngữ, Đại học HuếThis study analyzes doctor-patient communication in ten consultations from House M.D. using the Roter Interaction Analysis System (RIAS) and pragmatic analysis to address two questions: (a) how verbal dominance, content balance, and communication control manifest in Dr. Gregory House’s consultations; and (b) how House’s question types and questioning styles shape patient participation. Utterances were segmented and coded in NVivo version 20, and summarized using three indices (Verbal Dominance Ratio (VDR), Content Balance Ratio (CBR), and Communication- Control Ratio (CCR)) and adjacency-pair cross-tabulations linking each question to the next patient turn. Results show near-balanced speaking shares at the corpus level (House 499 vs. patient side 533; pooled VDR ≈ 0.94) but a strong biomedical skew (pooled CBR ≈ 0.64; 7/10 episodes < 1.00). CCR (>1) indicates “patient-controlled” talk by construction, driven chiefly by House’s information-giving and counseling rather than patient initiative. Of 99 questions, open-ended and yes/no predominate; House’s default style is direct & blunt. Open-ended questions most often elicit extended answers and compliance, but they can also elicit counter-questions. Meanwhile, yes/no formats concentrate minimal replies and rhetorical questions frequently yield silence. Overall, the series portrays interactional control as a function of question design and delivery rather than airtime, with House’s blunt, diagnostic interrogation narrowing patients’ participatory options despite near-balanced turn counts.

Among many types of translation, subtitling is becoming increasingly necessary, especially when speakers want to share their global knowledge through popular platforms (such as TED Talks). Because TED Talks are presented by speakers from all over the world, with different cultures, if people do not share the same culture, it could be very difficult to fully understand the messages that they want to deliver. These talks often contain many CSEs such as idioms, metaphors, humor, historical and political references, or concepts connected to a particular culture, which are big challenges for translators nowadays. This study focuses on how those cultural elements are translated from English into Vietnamese subtitles in 30 selected TED Talks videos purposely. This study builds a bilingual corpus including English transcripts and Vietnamese subtitles that are compared with each other. From there, the study can identify and classify cultural elements, analyze the translation methods used, and finally evaluate their effectiveness in keeping the original meaning, cultural value of the English version. The analysis is based on the theoretical frameworks of Nida (1964), Newmark (1988), Baker (1992), and Venuti (1995). Those theoretical frameworks include common strategies such as keeping the original, cultural substitution, functional equivalence, paraphrasing, omission, and foreignization . The results show that literal translation and functional equivalence are often used to make sure that the audience can easily understand. However, in many cases, adjusting or substituting cultural elements is necessary to keep the expressive effect and maintain audience interest. In addition, the study also finds repeated problems such as loss of meaning, over- domestication, or omission of important cultural nuances . This study brings both theoretical and practical value to the field of translation. It shows the complicated cultural translation in TED Talk subtitles and suggests solutions to 3 improve translation quality. The results can be used for students as a reference, also translators, and teachers in showing the differences between the original language and target language, also the ability to convey cultural information in translation .
