A STUDY ON THE USE OF SHADOWING EXERCISES TO TEACH RONUNCIATION FOR ELEMENTARY VIETNAMESE ADULT LEARNERS OF ENGLISH : NGHIÊN CỨU VỀ VIỆC SỬ DỤNG BÀI TẬP SHADOWING ĐỂ DẠY PHÁT ÂM TIẾNG ANH CHO NGƯỜI HỌC VIỆT, Ở ĐỘ TUỔI ĐI LÀM VÀ TRÌNH ĐỘ CƠ BẢN / Lê Hoàng Thúy Sang; Tôn Nữ Như Hương Huế, 2021118tr. ; 28cm.Trường Đại học Ngoại ngữ - Đại học HuếThis thesis is about the possibility of implementing the shadowing exercise in teaching pronunciation to elementary Vietnamese adult learners of English. The purpose of this study is threefold: (a) to test the effectiveness of the shadowing exercise in improving Vietnamese adult learners’ pronunciation, (b) to find suitable strategies for implementing the shadowing exercise in pronunciation teaching online, (c) to know what learners think about the effectiveness of the shadowing exercise in improving their pronunciation. To achieve those aforementioned purposes, a three-cycle action research was conducted in three months. Participants’ logs together with online-based interview and in-depth literature review were also employed to collect adequate data from 6 research participants. The data collected from those sources have revealed three key findings. First, positive changes in both learners’ actions and reflections appeared after the implementation of (i) concrete and clear supports, (ii) a strict following up routine and (iii) a supportive and interactive environment. Second, after three months of shadowing practice, learners could speak with a more intelligible pronunciation as well as be more aware of the production of all key elements of English pronunciation. Finally, all learners gave positive feedback on the effectiveness of the shadowing exercise in improving their pronunciation and boosting their confidence in speaking English.

EFL NOVICE TEACHERS' PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: PERSONAL NEEDS AND PLANNING : NHU CẦU VÀ HOẠCH ĐỊNH CÁ NHÂN CHO CÔNG TÁC PHÁT TRIỂN CHUYÊN MÔN NGHIỆP VỤ CỦA GIÁO VIÊN MỚI GIẢNG DẠY TIẾNG ANH / Nguyễn Trịnh Thảo Trinh; Nguyễn Hồ Hoàng Thuỷ Huế, 2021105tr. ; 28cm.Trường Đại học Ngoại ngữ - Đại học HuếThis case study explores the personal needs and planning of EFL novice teachers at a university for their journey of professional development (PD). Ten EFL novice teachers with under five years of teaching experience were asked to reflect on their experience, personal needs, and plans for PD. The issues under investigation included (1) EFL novice teachers' personal needs for PD and whether the PD activities being held on the local scale met their needs, and (2) the teachers' PD plans based on their personal needs and the impacts of the PD activities at their workplace. Data collected from individual semi-structured interviews and personal reflection showed that despite some unsatisfying opinions concerning the current PD programs, most teachers had positive attitudes towards these PD activities, partly improving their teaching practice. Moreover, most EFL novice teachers did not have a specific plan for their PD since their perceptions of PD and their needs were ambiguous. The research findings have emphasized the significance of understanding EFL novice teachers' personal needs and plans to improve upcoming PD activities. Implications and recommendations were also proposed in order to take novice teachers' needs into consideration when organizing PD activities in educational contexts.

EFL STUDENTS' AWARENESS AND CHALLENGES OF CONDUCTING RESEARCH: AT UNIVERSITY OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES, HUE UNIVERSITY : NHẬN THỨC CỦA SINH VIÊN VỀ VIỆC NGHIÊN CỨU KHOA HỌC VÀ NHỮNG KHÓ KHĂN TRONG QUÁ TRÌNH THỰC HIỆN NGHIÊN CỨU TẠI TRƯỜNG ĐẠI HỌC NGOẠI NGỮ, ĐẠI HỌC HUẾ / Trần Nhã Quân; Trương Viên Huế, 2021104tr. ; 28cm.Trường Đại học Ngoại ngữ - Đại học HuếThe purposes of this mixed-methods study were to explore EFL students’ awareness of the importance of conducting research at the undergraduate level and challenges faced by students when conducting research were investigated. In addition, students’ attitudes towards conducting research, students’ perceived practices of conducting research, including the preparation and institutional support for conducting research. The population of the study was EFL undergraduate students studying at the University of Foreign Languages, Hue University. The sample consisted of 200 third-year and fourth-year students majoring in English Language Studies and English Language Teaching. The data was collected through structured questionnaires and in-depth, semi-structured interviews. The results show that EFL students were aware of the importance of doing research at the undergraduate level and showed a positive attitude towards participating in research as student researchers. In terms of the EFL students’ perceived practices of conducting undergraduate research, two issues were investigated. The first one was the preparation for students’ undergraduate research. The findings reveal that the studied EFL students, with or without research experience, were prepared in a variety of ways to conduct research at the university level. For students who had the experience of doing research, they received considerable support from their institution, especially from their supervisors, when doing research. However, the findings suggest that the reality of conducting undergraduate research does pose some considerable challenges for these students. The most frequently encountered difficulties included choosing an interesting research topic, developing a theoretical framework relevant to the research objectives, and identifying research gaps following a review of prior studies. These findings imply that, in recognition of the value of undergraduate research, the institution should expand the chances for all students to conduct research during their university years and provide them with more substantial and immediate assistance throughout the research process to assist them in overcoming obstacles and achieving satisfactory outcomes.
