A STUDY ON ENGLISH MAJORS’ REFLECTIONSON SPEAKING ACTIVITIES IN THE COURSEBOOK NORTHSTAR 2 / Hoàng Nhật Minh Ngọc; Lê Phạm Hoài Hương Huế, 2022tr. ; 28cm.Trường Đại học Ngoại ngữ - Đại học HuếThe purpose of this study was to find out what English major students at Hue University of Foreign Languages thought about speaking activities in Northstar 2 coursebook and how they studied with these activities. The participant included 100 English faculty students, 69 of whom were English-linguistic majors and 31 of whom were English pedagogy majors. To fulfill the study's goal, data was collected and analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data was obtained from 100 students using an online questionnaire created on a Google Form and random interviews with 10 students. According to the findings, the majority of students believed that the speaking exercises in Northstar 2 improved their Speaking abilities. Besides that, the exercises in the Northstar 2 coursebook are not only helpful for increasing students' speaking skills, but also for assisting students in developing a variety of skills such as presentation, teamwork, communication skills, persuasive skills, argument skills, and critical thinking. Students are also taught language components such as grammatical structures, phrase patterns, and how to use them in context. Furthermore, the activities in the book provided pronunciation rules and exercises which aid in the development of students' listening abilities. In general, the speaking exercises in Northstar 2 coursebook are diverse and helpful in enhancing students' speaking abilities. Furthermore, it was discovered that students commonly employ Northstar 2 coursebook exercises to develop their speaking skills. More specifically they used vocabulary to learn terminology related to the topic they were talking about, pronunciation to learn how to pronounce a word, group activities to develop their speaking skills, and Work in pairs activities to find partners to communicate with. In terms of teaching and learning the speaking skills from the findings, implications were put forward for teachers, students, and textbook designers
