Tóm tắt Effective communication is pivotal in doctor-patient interactions, influencing diagnostic accuracy, treatment adherence, and patient satisfaction in intercultural healthcare settings. This thesis examines questioning strategies employed by doctors and patients at an international medical clinic in Vietnam, where both parties use English as a foreign language. The study utilized a descriptive and interpretive qualitative research design, with data collected through audio recordings of 24 English-language doctor-patient consultations, involving 10 Vietnamese doctors and 24 Western patients, selected through purposive sampling over a three-month period (March to May 2025). By utilizing Freed’s (1994) taxonomy of question functions, alongside Speech Act Theory (Austin, 1962; Searle, 1969) and Politeness Theory (Brown & Levinson, 1987), the study analyzes these recordings, comprising 253 doctor-initiated and 121 patient-initiated questions. The findings reveal a marked asymmetry: doctors predominantly used two strategies, employing External Information Questions and Talk Questions, to elicit medical details and ensure clarity. Patients, however, favored the strategy of using Talk Questions to confirm understanding, reflecting their participatory yet deferential role. The infrequent use of Expressive Style Questions in both parties highlights the pragmatic emphasis of consultations in medical contexts. This study enhances discourse analysis research by utilizing Freed’s (1994) framework within Vietnam’s intercultural medical context, offering important insights for the improvement of healthcare communication training courses and the advancement of patient- centered care in doctor-patient consultations.
