| This paper reported the results of an investigation into students’ use of out-of-class activities to practice English speaking in five lower secondary schools in Huong Thuy town, Thua Thien Hue province. The participants included 15 teachers of English and 123 students from 6th to 9th grade in the 2021-2022 academic year. The data in this study were obtained through student questionnaire and teacher and student interviews. The results indicated that the most popular and frequently used out-of-class activities by students were watching videos on YouTube or TikTok, listening to music, using social media and online chatting which related to the Internet and based on students’ favorite topics. In contrast, interviewing, performing monologues and joining English clubs did not seem to be very popular out-of-class activities. The findings also revealed the reasons, ways and some difficulties they encountered in conducting those activities to practice English speaking. Besides, another significant finding was that students did not have a lot of chances to practice English speaking in class and had to resort to out-of-class activities, but they still had difficulties conducting them due to lack of necessary skills. The paper also provided practical recommendations for students, teachers and administrators so that out-of-class activities could be integrated and conducted more often to help students practice English speaking more effectively. |
